How to cover roses for the winter. Step-by-step instruction

To prevent your roses from freezing from a harsh and snowless winter, they need to be properly prepared for wintering and covered.

Thanks to current materials, this can be done quickly without spending much effort.

Preparing roses for cover

There are a few simple rules and tips for preparing a rose for winter.

Pruning flowers should be stopped until September. The rest of the buds should not be touched until the roses are covered. Why? Pruning stimulates the growth of new buds and shoots. If you do not prune, then the rose will not give new shoots that will not have time to ripen before winter. The danger of the late appearance of new shoots lies in the fact that their freezing often leads to the death of strong, healthy old shoots.

In the first decade of October, gardeners need to remove all leaves from the bushes, including the lower branches. These leaves should then be removed away from the plants. Experienced gardeners recommend discarding dry leaves and treating roses from pests, as spores of pathogenic fungi and pest larvae may remain on it.

It is necessary to cover and partially prune roses after the first frost. Pruning or covering too early will lead to the appearance of young shoots and damping of the roots.

Choosing the right shelter for roses

The covering material, as well as the structure itself, must have the following characteristics:

Structural strength. It is needed to withstand any bad weather. After all, winter and autumn are torrential rains, thicker snow and high humidity. Accordingly, only the most durable material is able to withstand such a load of natural factors.

Vapor permeability. It is necessary in order to create an ideal microclimate and prevent the roots from rotting out. Under the vapor-permeable material, the plant will breathe, but will not freeze.

How to cover roses for the winter, step by step instructions

The first step is to hill the roses. For hilling roses, it is best to take clean soil or dry peat. The earth from under the bush will not work, as it may be infected. Do not rake the ground into a heap under the bush itself. In this way, you can expose the roots, because roses are quite long. Ideally, a mound of dry earth should be added to the base of the bush, its height should be at least 20-30 cm.

The second step is to tie or bend the branches for compactness, which will then provide us with the ease of carrying out subsequent procedures.

The third step is to cover or wrap the tronds with white agrofibre, evenly distribute it on the soil and fix it where the earthen or peat mound ends.

The fourth step is to install the frame, securely fix the legs in the soil and cover again with agrofilm (choose a coarser agrofilm). Fix the agrofilm with a string or pegs.
