Preparing grapes for winter

Autumn is an important period for preparing grape vines for winter. How well the preparation will be done will affect the number, taste and health of the bunches of the next harvest.

In the fall, it is necessary to carry out a set of works at once:

“Water” the grapes – the vine and roots should have enough moisture, even after harvesting the fruits, especially if the autumn turned out to be dry;

Fertilize and loosen the ground – any soil becomes depleted and compacted over time, and this will definitely affect the yield of grapes;

Treat grapes from diseases and pests – if this is not done, then fungi, mold and pests can safely go to winter along with the vine, and in the spring attack the plant with renewed vigor;

Prune excess and diseased shoots – removing part of the branches helps the grapes survive the winter and rest, and also stimulates the growth of new, he althy and productive branches;

Shelter from winter weather – this rule is especially relevant for the northern regions, where without insulation, the culture simply will not survive the cold.

If you prepare the vine according to all the rules, it will withstand even 30-degree Siberian frosts. In regions where the temperature does not drop below -15 degrees, the plant can be omitted or insulated to a minimum.

When to prepare grapes for winter

Preparation of the vine for wintering begins immediately after harvest. Watering should be done moderately, but it is important to keep the ground moist throughout the fall, especially with poor rainfall.

Sandy soil likes frequent watering with a little water. And clay is rare, but more abundant.

Fertilization and processing should be done before pruning: in early to mid-September in regions with a temperate climate; and at the end of October – with a warm one. But no later than so that the plant has time to absorb and accumulate nutrients. For the first time, fertilizer for the roots should be applied 3-4 years after planting grapes, and sprayed with top dressing annually.

It is difficult to specifically designate the period when to prune the vine of grapes, since natural conditions depend on the region. It is easier to navigate by the condition of the plant. It is necessary to remove excess shoots when all the leaves have fallen, but the first frost has not yet come.

There should be a break of 2-3 weeks between pruning bushes and insulation for the cold period. During this time, the plant heals wounds and slows down internal processes.

It is recommended to cover the vine for the winter at a temperature of -5 degrees. There is no need to rush, because under insulation the plant will continue to grow. And with the first frost, the opened buds will die. Premature shelter can also lead to profuse dampness and decay.
