How to properly prune currant and gooseberry bushes for a large harvest
With the onset of spring, we look forward to the awakening of nature. For gardeners, this means that it’s time for an important procedure – pruning currant and gooseberry bushes. This is an important component of caring for these plants, which guarantees a bountiful and healthy harvest. But how to do it right? Let’s take a closer look.
Removal of damaged and old shoots
The primary task of the gardener is to remove all damaged, dried, diseased and weak shoots. This will help the plant get more light, especially in the central part of the shrub. In addition, it is recommended to prune branches that have already borne fruit. For blackcurrants, these are, as a rule, branches older than 4-5 years, and for white, red currants and gooseberries – older than 5-7 years.
Leaving the strongest shoots
After pruning, we leave 15-20 of the strongest shoots that emerge from the soil and have adventitious roots. This will ensure the stable development of the bush. It should be remembered that branches of each age should make up 15-20% of the total, which will help maintain balanced growth.
Pruning technique at different stages of growth
The formation of the bush begins in the second year after planting. In the first year, 2-4 well-developed buds are left on each branch, while weak and poorly located shoots are cut out. In the second year, 3-4 of the best annual shoots are left, emerging from the base of the bush, in addition to the main skeletal branches. In the future, pruning is carried out according to a similar principle.
Bush balance and lighting
When pruning basal shoots, new skeletal branches are evenly distributed so that they do not shade each other. The rest of the annual basal shoots are shortened by a third, the tops with 3-5 buds are removed for 2-3-year-old branches. Branches older than 4 years need to remove dried tops.
These tips will help you care for your currant and gooseberry bushes, providing them with the most productive life cycle. Even if you are a beginner in growing these plants, with some effort and attention you can achieve great results!
