Planting beets before winter: tips to help grow a bountiful harvest

Sowing beets before winter: how to properly prepare and succeed

You know, when the first snow falls, it seems that there is nothing you can do in the garden. But we will learn that this is not entirely true, and now I will tell you how to plant beets before winter. Yes, yes, even snow is not an obstacle to this. So, let’s see when and how best to do it to get a good harvest in spring.

When to sow beets before winter

Sowing beets before winter is best done from October to the end of November. One of the folk ways to determine the right time for this is to pay attention to cherry trees. If the leaves from the cherries have already fallen, this is a sure sign that it is time to start sowing. The main thing is to wait for the frosty temperature, which will provide the right conditions for winter sowing.

Preparing the landing site

First of all, it is important to choose the right place for the garden. Ideal precursors for beets will be onions, pumpkins, nightshades, legumes or clover. Instead, refuse to plant after cabbage, spinach, potatoes, carrots or rapeseed, as this can negatively affect yields.

The main thing is that the site is sunny, and the soil is loose and well-drained. Prepare the soil by fertilizing it with dolomite flour or wood ash. Do not forget to add humus (three kilograms per square meter), a little ash or phosphates, and mix it all well.

Sowing process and care

When the first snow has already fallen, do not be discouraged. Just sweep it out of the furrows prepared in advance (about three centimeters deep) and spread the dry seeds at intervals of about 20 cm. It is not necessary to water the soil either before or after sowing.

Cover the plantings with a dry mixture of earth, sand and rotted compost (in a ratio of 1:1:1). After that, add three centimeters of dry peat mulch and cover with spruce branches. The final step is to cover the beds with snow, which will provide additional protection.

That’s right, even winter snow will not prevent you from preparing for the spring season. By following these simple tips, you can confidently expect a tasty and healthy harvest of beets.
