The primary task of the gardener is to remove all damaged, dried, diseased and weak shoots. This will help the plant get more light, especially in the central part of the shrub. In addition, it is recommended to prune branches that have already borne fruit. For blackcurrants, these are, as a rule, branches older than 4-5 years, and for white, red currants and gooseberries – older than 5-7 years. <\/p>\n\n
After pruning, we leave 15-20 of the strongest shoots that emerge from the soil and have adventitious roots. This will ensure the stable development of the bush. It should be remembered that branches of each age should make up 15-20% of the total, which will help maintain balanced growth. <\/p>\n\n
The formation of the bush begins in the second year after planting. In the first year, 2-4 well-developed buds are left on each branch, while weak and poorly located shoots are cut out. In the second year, 3-4 of the best annual shoots are left, emerging from the base of the bush, in addition to the main skeletal branches. When pruning basal shoots, new skeletal branches are evenly distributed so that they do not shade each other. The rest of the annual basal shoots are shortened by a third, the tops with 3-5 buds are removed for 2-3-year-old branches. Branches older than 4 years need to remove dried tops. <\/p>\n\n
